Sunny day at last

Everyone a bit confused today by the appearance in the sky of a large glowing golden orb emitting a fair amount of heat, not sure what this portends but we were happy to be able to shed a few layers and get stuck back in after our miserably wet day yesterday.

Another whalebone socket turned up, this time acting as a pivot stone in a doorway, you can just about see it set next to the flag in front of Caz's hand in the photo, it needs to dry out a bit before it can be carefully cleaned and photographed:

Elvire was back on site today all the way from France, she's come back north to get away from the heat so slightly ironic that we've finally had a hot sunny day after what seems like endless rain and mist. She lost no time getting back into the swing of structure 5, half sectioning one of our many hearths.

Busy day for visitors today, including a group from our friends at the Orkney Archaeology Society here enjoying a tour from Julie:

Finally I'm sure you all remember the finely ground stone disc found last week by Alex, this had now been carefully cleaned by Julie and photographed by Steve and here it is in all its glory:

and here's the other side:

Still think that's going to be the start find of the dig but we've got a few weeks to go yet.
